Carmi School - Code of Conduct
School Expectations of Students - Code of Conduct
The staff of Carmi Elementary School believes that the majority of students behave in reasonable, responsible, positive ways. Staff are committed to creating a safe, caring and orderly environment. Students have assisted in the development and understand the need for the following expectations. We encourage parents to discuss the school expectations with their children and to help us achieve success with our school wide approach.
A. School-Wide Expectations
We expect everyone at Carmi Elementary School to show consideration, courtesy and respect to ourselves, to each other and to our property. Parents are key partners in assisting us in this regard.
General Expectations for All:
- Call a person by his or her given name
- Use names or language that does not discriminate or interfere with the Human Rights Code
- Use appropriate language
- Play safely
- Keep our hands and feet to ourselves
- If your child brings a cell phone for safety or communication it must remain in his or her backpack during the school day.
Before School Expectations:
- Students are supervised at school from 8:20 until the bell rings at 8:35 am
- Upon arriving at school - before the bell, students are expected to place backpacks near their entrance door and to play outside until the welcome bell at 8:35 am
- Students will be collected by their teacher after the welcome bell
- Students who attend the Breakfast Club are able to enter the school through the front door between 8:15 am and 8:30 am
- They are then expected to hang their packs and coats, to attend Breakfast Club and then to go outside until the bell
Noon hour Expectations:
- Students who bring their lunch to school are expected to remain on the school grounds at noon unless a note from a parent requests permission for them to go elsewhere
- Students are also expected to eat their lunch politely in their assigned classrooms and conduct themselves with restaurant like manners during lunch hour. On the rare occasion, if a child is not able to follow lunch rules, other provisions may need to be made (example: the student may have to have lunch at home for a period of time).
- Students are expected to eat at their own seats / and to eat their own lunch (no sharing)
- Students are to have a book or other quiet activity at their desks for when they are finished eating
- Supervisors will facilitate the putting away of lunches and will dismiss the group once the room and desks are clean
- Students will remain in classrooms until 12:10 at the earliest and will have until 12:20 to finish eating if needed
- Outside play time is from 12:10 - 12:40
- Teachers will greet students at their designated outside doors
Food Allergies:
For the safety of individuals with severe nut/peanut allergies, we remind you that we are a nut aware school. We ask for your support in helping us keep all students safe by ensuring that snacks and food items are nut/peanut free.
Moving through the School:
- Students are expected to walk quietly and safely to and from all activities in an orderly manner
- Staff and students are going to use the right quiphand side of hallways with consistency when moving around our school
- Staff will use key stop points in the halls when moving as a group (ie. stop at the classroom door, the double doors (near the office), stop at the stairs (near the gym), stop at the door destination area or exit)
- Students are to keep their hands to themselves and to walk single file when moving as a group
Gym and Playground Equipment:
Students are expected to use school and playground equipment appropriately. By playing safe games students will not harm or potentially endanger themselves accordingly. They should be supervised directly when in these areas.
B. Classroom Expectations and School-wide Expectations
Each classroom teacher, together with the students, will develop a list of reasonable expectations and consequences for their classroom. These will be communicated clearly to students and parents.
C. Consequences - Behaviour/Discipline
Our school approach to discipline will:
- Help the student to identify his/her problem(s)
- Help the student solve the problem he/she has
- Leave the student's dignity intact
In keeping with this positive approach to behaviour, the staff of Carmi Elementary School will continue to ensure that students regularly receive assistance, encouragement, praise and specific feedback regarding their many positive behaviours and academic gains. The school also recognizes that there are some circumstances (eg. intellectual, social or behavioural disability) when lenience is warranted. Some examples of unacceptable conduct might include: behaviour that interferes with the learning or safety of students (the student involved or other students), acts of bullying or violence, or any activity that is illegal. Any consequences for inappropriate behaviour will be timely, solution focused and respectful. Such behaviour is tracked in the office.
Progressive discipline starts at the classroom level where the teacher works directly with the student (and, where appropriate, the parent) to arrive at solutions. When intervention efforts are not successful, School Based Team is a resource that our school uses as a problem solving body - with the goal of helping students achieve success. Parents and the school principal will be included in the discipline process in recurring or serious instances. If a serious breach of conduct occurs, other parties (for example, police or district officers) may be involved. School District 67 does not condone retaliation by anyone against a student who has made a complaint. School District 67 takes all reasonable steps to ensure that acts of retaliation do not occur.
